Elements of a Bahá'í Identity
- Reflections on the Life of the Spirit (Book 1)
- This course has three main purposes for the participants:
- understanding the Bahá’í Writings in order to fulfill the obligation of studying the Writings every day.
- developing the required attitudes toward prayer, and acquiring the habit of memorizing them.
- understanding that the true significance of life is to be found in the development of the soul.
Teaching
- Arising to Serve (Book 2)
- Focuses on skills and abilities for specific acts of service all related to expansion and consolidation, including:
- understanding that the joy of teaching is in the very act of sharing with others the Word of God
- developing the capability of sharing a number of deepening themes, including giving presentations on Bahá’í themes.
- assisting participants to acquire the ability to introduce Bahá’í ideas into a conversation.
Teaching Children and Youth
- Teaching Children's Classes Grade 1 (Book 3)
- Helps individuals who wish to undertake the highly meritorious service of teaching regular classes for the spiritual education of children. The Ruhi book, Reflections on the Life of the Spirit, is a suggested prerequisite. Lessons are geared for preschool and elementary children
- Drawing on the Power of the Word
- For Junior youth. Like other materials of the Ruhi Institute, this book is concerned with the development of capabilities. Specifically, it focuses on the capability of exercising the power of expression. The content of the readings contribute to the development of another capability, that of identifying the moral implications of speech and action.
Enhanced understanding of the Faith
- Twin Manifestations (Book 4)
- The three units in this Ruhi course are devoted to helping participants acquire a thorough and systematic knowledge of the lives of the Bab and Baha’u’llah. There is an equal emphasis on the insights offered into spiritual matters as well as the knowledge conveyed about the history of the Faith. Importance is given to the ability to narrate the stories of the Bab and Baha’u’llah in a way that touches the listener’s heart.
Teaching - More in-depth
- Teaching the Cause (Book 6)
- Embarks on an in-depth exploration of the subject of teaching including:
- understanding that teaching is an act of spiritual significance, involving attention to one’s inner condition
- reflecting on the qualities and attitudes of a teacher of the Cause and engaging in activity
- becoming familiar with some approaches and methods of teaching endeavors and collective campaigns and designing and implementing their own personal teaching plan.
Tutoring Others
- Walking Together on a Path of Service (Book 7)
- Prepares individuals to function as tutors of Ruhi study circles. The purposes include: raising awareness of the spiritual dynamics of advancing along a path of service to the Cause and increasing understanding of the forces at work; examining some of the concepts, attitudes, skills and abilities that contribute to the capability of a tutor and appreciating the role of artistic endeavors in the activity of study circles. Prerequisite: Reflections on the Life of the Spirit. Books 2 & 6 also recommended. Note that in addition to tutor training, tutors must personally complete any given course in the sequence prior to offering it as a study circle.
Core Curriculum Sequence
Elements of a Bahá'í identity
- We Are Bahá'ís
- This one day course for new believers, seekers, and others provides an introduction to the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh, an overview of His fundamental principles and laws, and practice teaching the Faith.
- Fundamental Verities Part I - To Serve the Covenant:
- Participants will explore: The Oneness of God; the mysteries of the human spirit; the unique link between the soul and its Creator and the Covenant.
Teaching
- Fundamental Verities Part II - Every Believer Is a Teacher
- Through this training, participants learn how to:
- appreciate the joy and significance of teaching
- build friendships
- respond to the questions, hopes and concerns of seekers
- plan and carry out firesides
Teaching Children and Youth
- Teacher Training
- Training teachers to empower Bahá'í children and youth as knowledgeable, consecrated teachers of the Cause and servants of humanity. A comprehensive curriculum with scope and sequence for ages 6-14, and lesson development skills are included. Accompanying sample lesson plans and a Bahá'u'lláh storybook textbook are available. Curriculum is adaptable for youth and adults.
- Youth Empowerment
- For youth, easily adaptable for junior youth. Places emphasis on transforming one's personal life and "living the life" according to the standards set before us in the Writings. Participants learn to apply spiritual principles, identify ways their community can better teach and serve, and develop a concrete plan of action which they can implement in their respective communities within a reasonable time. A series of firesides that compliment the media campaign is a special “gift” to practice and utilize.
Enhanced Understanding of the Faith
- Fundamental Verities Part III - A New Civilization
- This course provides opportunities to learn and to practice: The Bahá'í pattern of life; the relationship between individual empowerment and community life, practical planning for Feasts, Holy Days, and devotional gatherings, and the role of the Institutions in creating patterns of community life.
Teaching - More in-depth
- Fundamental Verities Part IV - Teaching Christians includes:
- recognizing the spiritual bounties and obligations of teaching
- gaining the confidence and skills to present Bahá'u'lláh to Christians
- building bridges of agreement and mutual respect while avoiding criticism and argument
- enhancing confidence in understanding and sharing how Bahá'í scripture relates to the Bible
Tutoring Others
Individuals who have completed any core curriculum trainer training, Ruhi tutor training, or core curriculum teacher training may serve as tutors for all courses in this sequence except Teacher Training and Youth Empowerment.
